In the year 2200, humanity has expanded into space, settling colonies on the Moon and Mars. Joe Maya, a boy raised on Mars, witnesses a battle between two alien forces from beyond the solar system: Princess Romina's Elshank, seeking the legendary ninja of Radorio star legend to defeat the invading Boom army, and the Boom army itself. Joe joins Elshank alongside new friends Mike, who pilots the aquatic robot Bakuryū, and childhood friend Lenny, who pilots the aerial robot Hōraiō, while Joe himself takes the ground-combat robot Kuroshishi. Whenever the group faces defeat, a mysterious ninja robot called Tobikage appears from nowhere, combining with one of their three machines to turn the tide of battle — though who created it, and why, remains the series' central unanswered mystery. The show was cancelled early after merchandise sales fell short of expectations; in a memorable bit of trivia, toy retailers reportedly tried offloading unsold Tobikage stock years later by falsely marketing it under the identically-read name of an unrelated, more popular character to attract a different fanbase.
