Unlike most anime adaptations that follow an established manga, Getter Robo launched both its manga (in Weekly Shōnen Sunday) and its anime (on Fuji TV) on the same week in April 1974. The anime ran for 51 episodes and concluded in May 1975. Ken Ishikawa continued the manga story independently for decades, developing it into increasingly dark and cosmic territory far beyond the original anime.
