In the late 20th century, Earth suffers devastating damage from the sudden invasion of the Muge Zorbados forces. In secret, Chief Ross Igor and Dr. Kōtarō Yaduki complete four Beast Fighter Machines, entrusted to Shinobu Fujiwara, Sara Yuki, Ryo Shiba, and Masato Shikibu, who form the Beast Fighter Squad. Through a war marked by superior officer Shapiro's betrayal and the deaths of comrades, the four machines evolve — through beast, humanoid, and finally into the combined Super Beast Machine God, Dancouga. Unusually for a robot anime, the combined Dancouga does not appear until episode 16, four months into the broadcast, and does not use its finishing weapon even in that first appearance — an intentionally slow-burn structure rare for a TV series built around a titular combining robot.
