GODMARS

THE FIRST SIX-MACHINE COMBINER

Born from Mitsuteru Yokoyama's Mars, GodMars transformed a science fiction manga into one of the most memorable super robot series of the early 1980s. Combining six individual machines into a single giant warrior, it expanded the scale of combining robots at a moment when the genre was beginning to evolve beyond its classic formulas. Beneath its heroic battles, GodMars delivered a surprisingly emotional story centered on identity, loyalty, sacrifice, and destiny. More than four decades later, it remains one of the defining super robots of its era.

— DEVELOPMENT HISTORY —
Original Source
GodMars originated as an adaptation of Mars, a science fiction manga serialized by Mitsuteru Yokoyama in 1976. The original work revolved around a young alien whose fate was linked to a hidden superweapon capable of destroying Earth should humanity prove unworthy of survival.
Television Adaptation
For its television incarnation, Tokyo Movie Shinsha radically reimagined the premise. The darker science fiction themes of Mars were transformed into a large-scale super robot saga centered around heroism, sacrifice, family bonds, and the power of unity. The six-machine combination concept was created specifically for the anime and did not exist in Yokoyama's manga.
Genre Context
Premiering in late 1981, GodMars arrived during a pivotal moment in mecha history. Gundam had already challenged traditional super robot conventions, while Ideon and Dougram were pushing the genre toward increasingly mature narratives. GodMars responded by embracing emotional storytelling while preserving the spectacle and grandeur of classic combining robots.
Although inspired by Mars, the anime ultimately eclipsed its source material in popularity. Today, GodMars is remembered as one of the most successful reinterpretations ever made from a Mitsuteru Yokoyama property.
