DAI APOLON

THE PRINCE WHO BECAME THE ROBOT

UFO Warrior Dai Apolon (UFO戦士ダイアポロン) is a Japanese super robot produced by Eiken in 1976. Unlike any giant robot before it, Dai Apolon has no pilot inside a cockpit — Takeshi, the last prince of Planet Apolon, merges with the machine at a molecular level through solar-powered body fusion, becoming one with the robot he was born to command.

Genre
Super Robot / Science Fiction
— DEVELOPMENT HISTORY —
Project Designation
Dai Apolon
Original Designer (Story)
Labi, Minister of Science of Planet Apolon (in-universe)
Construction Purpose
Created by Planet Apolon's science ministry as Earth's guardian robot, to be wielded by the planet's royal heir against the forces of General Dazaan
Activation Method
Three component robots — Header, Trangur, and Legger — combine via the Space Clear jet. Takeshi then invokes the word "gasshin," triggering solar-powered body fusion through the Key Energy crystal embedded in his chest, causing him to grow and merge with the robot
Historical Significance
Considered one of the first super robots to combine mechanical and biological components, as the pilot's own body becomes physically integrated with the machine during combat. Also notable as the debut work of character designer Toyoo Ashida
— CONTROL SYSTEM —
Primary Operator
Takeshi (Prince of Planet Apolon)
Control Method
Cybernetic body fusion — the pilot physically merges with the robot through solar-powered molecular transformation
Pilot Location
Integrated into the robot's body through fusion
Cockpit
No conventional cockpit — pilot becomes one with the machine
Autonomy
None
Command Authority
Exclusive to Takeshi, whose royal bloodline activates the Key Energy crystal
Support Pilots
Miki, Matsuo, and Goro — pilots of the UFO support craft
Unlike any previous super robot, Dai Apolon requires the pilot to physically merge with the machine. Takeshi does not sit inside a cockpit — through solar-powered body fusion, he grows to giant scale and becomes part of the robot itself, making him simultaneously pilot and weapon.
— PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS —
Robot Class
Combining Giant Humanoid Robot (bio-mechanical hybrid)
Body Structure
Three-unit combination: Header (head unit) · Trangur (torso unit) · Legger (leg unit)
Head Design
Helmet-style head with visor, modeled after an American football player's helmet
Visual Characteristics
  • Armored humanoid body with football player-inspired design
  • Distinctive helmet-style head unit
  • Combination seams visible between the three component robots
  • Armored plating of rare metal originating from Planet Apolon
Height
120 m
Weight
35,000 t
— POWER SYSTEM —
Primary Energy Source
Solar energy via the Energy Heart — a reactor created by King Shin Apolon
Armor Material
Rare metal of extraterrestrial origin from Planet Apolon
Activation Key
Key Energy crystal implanted in Takeshi's chest
Energy Concept
Solar power collected through the Energy Heart activates the Key Energy, enabling body fusion and all combat systems. The robot cannot combine in conditions where sunlight is blocked, such as during a solar eclipse
— COMBAT CHARACTERISTICS —
Primary Combat Style
  • Close-quarters physical combat
  • Energy projectile attacks
  • Disc and saucer-based weapons
  • UFO support fire from allied craft
Signature Weapons
  • Apolon Ball
  • Apolon Beam
  • Apolon Saucer
  • Apolon Destroy
  • Apolon Prayer
  • Apolon Triangle
  • Apolon Drill Turn
  • Moon Cross
  • Legger Missiles
  • Cutter Saucers
Mission Profile
  • Defense of Earth against Dazaan Army invasion
  • Recovery of the stolen Energy Heart
  • Protection of humanity from extraterrestrial conquest
Operational Environment
  • Land
  • Air
  • Near-space operations
Dai Apolon is solar-dependent — it cannot combine or activate its fusion systems when sunlight is blocked. This limitation was exploited by enemy forces on at least one occasion, using miniature robots to block the combination ports of the component machines and interrupt the transformation sequence.
