Historical Significance
Developed after Bandai asked Sunrise for "the next Gundam, but different." In the mid-21st century, human colony worlds in a distant star system come under attack by the native Kukutonians, who view Earth's colonization as an invasion. With their guard fleet wiped out and their families taken captive, thirteen surviving children board the Earth military training ship Jaanus and set out across space, using the ship's Round Vernian weapons — including the titular Vifam — to defend themselves as they search for their families. The series draws its central motif from Jules Verne's novel Two Years' Vacation, known in Japan as Fifteen Boys' Adventure Story.
— MAIN CHARACTERS —
Roddy
Central protagonist among the thirteen children stranded aboard the Jaanus.
The Jaanus's Thirteen Children
A group of thirteen orphaned boys and girls who take command of their training ship and its Round Vernian units after losing their families and guard fleet to the Kukutonian attack.
The Kukutonians
An alien race native to the region colonized by Earth, who see humanity's expansion into their star system as an invasion and respond with force.
— LEGACY —
Historical Position
One of the defining "survival drama" robot anime of the early 1980s, closing out the crowded 1983 season
Genre Innovation
Centered its cast entirely on child survivors acting as ordinary civilians rather than soldiers, an approach contemporaries and later historians single out as unusual for the genre's typical military framing
Relationship to Previous Mecha
Traces its roots to an early planning concept originally considered for Mobile Suit Gundam, developed at Bandai's request for "the next Gundam, but different"
Industry Impact
Launched the career of mechanical designer Mamoru Nagano, who went on to define the look of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and later created Five Star Stories
International Recognition
Followed by four OVA side-story episodes (1984–1985) and a 1998 spin-off series, Galactic Drifter Vifam 13, with an updated cast
